The Fight For The Top Spot of Google
Mark Buckshon over at Construction Marketing Ideas has been writing about me as of late.
Let me return that favor. Mark has achieved something few in our industry have; he owned a term in Google. That term is “construction marketing.” How did he do it?
The short answer to that question is he created a website that is the most relevant site about construction marketing.
The longer and more complicated answer is he got a good number of relevant sites to link to him, has the term “construction marketing” in his URL, and writes blog post after blog post that mentions “construction marketing,” often in the headline.
I’ve always said Mark owned that space. There was no point in anyone even trying to compete for that term in Google. But lately people have tried usurping him. The guy behind Construction Marketing Blog is using the same tactics Mark does. And he’s gaining ground. Also, the Construction Marketing Association website is gaining ground as is constructionmarketing.org.
Many people fight for the top spot on Google. It’s an admirable goal with one problem. Google is smarter than you.
What you might not realize is Google results are not universal. Even when you are not signed into Google, these results depend a bit on location.
For example, if you Google “construction marketing” in Ontario Canada, you won’t get exactly the same results as googling from San Diego, California. And from San Diego, your results will be different from the ones in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
If you are signed into Google, your results will be affected by your search history. For example, when I search for construction marketing, nobody comes close to Marks Construction Marketing Ideas blog.
Thats why Google Webmaster Tools usually gives you a range where you fall for a particular keyword or phrase.
Here are some terms this site ranks high in:
In each of these phases, this site, on average, falls between the first and third spots on google. The big idea here is on average because there are many factors that determine Google placement. And you simply can’t control all of them.
